How to solve Jumbl: tips for the letter-swap puzzle

How Jumbl boards work, how swaps and stars are scored, and practical tips for decoding every word before your swaps run out.

Jumbl looks simple: swap letters until the board spells real words. It gets difficult because every swap changes the whole board at once. These tips explain how a board works and how to plan your swaps.

How a Jumbl board works

A board has ten rows of letters. Each row holds seven letters, which make up either one seven-letter word or two shorter words (two and five letters, three and four, or the other way round). The letters you see are a code. When you tap two letters, they trade places in the code everywhere they appear, so one swap can fix several rows or break several others.

Classic and Genius modes

In Classic mode you restore every word to its original spelling. In Genius mode you can build any valid words the shared letter code allows, which gives you more freedom but makes it harder to know when you are done.

Your swap budget

Every level has a minimum number of swaps that will solve it, and you are allowed four more. Level 1 needs at least 7 swaps and allows 11. Level 16, the last in the campaign, needs at least 22 and allows 26. Because the budget is tight, a swap that merely tests a guess is expensive.

Eight tips for decoding the board

  1. Start with the short words. Rows that contain a two-letter word give the strongest clue, because there are only so many words of that length.
  2. Count the letters. The letters that appear most often across the board are usually common ones such as E, T, A, O, I and N.
  3. Look for double letters. A pair like LL, SS, EE or OO is a gift: few letters double up often.
  4. Spot common endings. A row that ends in a recognisable pattern such as -ING, -ED, -ER or -LY can fix three or four letters at once.
  5. Think before you tap. Check what a swap will do to every other row before you commit. A swap that fixes one word and wrecks two others is not progress.
  6. Use fixed letters as anchors. In Classic mode, letters that are in the right place become fixed. Build outwards from them.
  7. Chase the minimum. You earn up to five stars for swaps, so finishing with swaps left over scores better than scraping through.
  8. Mind the clock, but not too much. You also earn stars for speed, with a target time that grows with each level. Pausing the game caps the time rating at three stars.
